McCully Heritage Project

Location – 4/5

The lack of pictures and reviews on Hipcamp made it difficult to choose the best of the 4 available sites, but the reviews were good and the pictures looked promising so we decide to stay here and picked a site at random. We finally arrived and were greeted by the host, who was very nice, and she instructed us that our SUV should barely (luckily) make the dip in the road coming up. We scraped by (literally) and parked at the campsite.

Campground – 4/5

We stayed at site 4 which was located past two very narrow sites up a hill, very large, and farthest away from the others. We did not hear any of the neighbors except for a group across the pond (water carries noise) who were having an all-night party. The site had lots of sunlight (maybe too much) and the ground was soft for easy stake driving.

Here’s a quick virtual tour of our campsite

Activities – 2/5

Biking, Nature

This place is definitely not the place to go if you want to keep busy, rather it’s a place to go to enjoy nature and collect insects. Unfortunately, there were no good bike riding areas and no swimming area that we could see; however, there was a cool historic cabin you could visit and play in.

We spent most of our time relaxing or playing near the cabin. It was quiet for most of the trip, except for a point where a high school cross country team ran right through our campsite, which is apparently located right on the “fitness trail”. I wish we had known about this before booking, but it was a minor inconvenience.

Hiking – 5/5

There was an awesome 1.5Mile loop that was a great workout. We chose to go counter clockwise on the Blue North Loop. We struggled at first due to the trail being pretty steep but it would be worse if you went counter clockwise. Nature was beautiful and well maintained. There were a few observation areas to admire nature. There were a lot of off-shoots and side trails. We ended up hiking just over 2 miles in total.

Amenities 3/5

Bathrooms

The bathrooms were in a building a couple hundred feet from the camp site. They were clean and had nice showers and flush toilets. Very nice setup.

Firewood and Shopping

We had plenty off firewood just up the hill, and it seemed to come with the reservation (though we went ahead and pre-paid the $5 on Hipcamp). We just went up and got firewood as needed and tried not to be too greedy. Water was available up by the bathrooms. There was no store.

Overall Rating – 4/5

Overall, we give this site 4 out of 5. This is another one of those places you would go if you were wanting to just hang out and do nothing, or go on a short hike. This site would be good for a group as well.
